Northlop Graman has announced that the next-generation autonomous helicopter MQ-8C "Fires Cout" has begun to operate on US Navy ships.Even at night or bad weather, it is corresponded to information gathering and alert monitoring mission.The MQ-8C is an unmanned helicopter utilizing the aircraft of the Bell 407, a human small helicopter of Belhericopter.By utilizing existing aircraft, the initial development costs are reduced and both reliability and economy are balanced.It is equipped with a Leonardo AN/ZPY-8 Osprey X band radar, enabling long-distance target detection and tracking for long-distance targets even at nights and stormy weather.Initial operation ability was acquired in June 2019.It has more than 10 hours of flight performance and a cruising range of 1800 kilometers or more, and is expected to replace the MQ-8B in the future.By operating an autonomous unmanned helicopter and manned aircraft, the commander will be able to focus on manned aircraft.According to the announcement on January 24, local time, the MQ-8C is to the US Navy Freedom-class coastal battle ship Milward Key (LCS-5), along with the 22nd Maritime Battle Helicopter Air Corps (HSC-22 DET 5).It was operated on December 14, 2021, and has been on missions such as gathering information, warning monitoring, and reconnaissance.
