On March 4, 2022, Xiaomi, a major smartphone maker, announced the entry model "Redmi Note 11" equipped with "Snapdragon 680" on Soc for the Japanese market. The selling price is "24,800 yen (tax included)". Sales will start from March 10 (Thursday).

Although Redmi Note 11 is inexpensive, it uses "organic EL" that supports the maximum refresh rate of "90Hz" for the display. We have introduced "MIUI 13" to the firmware as soon as possible.
A competitor is the "moto g31", which Motorola launched in Japan from January 28, 2022 at "25,800 yen (tax included)".
Both models are also characterized by being stamina smartphones that use a large capacity battery of 5,000mAh. I think that it will be mainly used for watching videos and as a media player, but I am also concerned about "camera performance".
Both main cameras have a resolution of 50 million pixels. Although it is not listed on the official page, as of March 4, 2022, I can think of no image sensor other than the "Samsung JN1" for low-end models that support a resolution of 50 million pixels.

This time, Xiaomi lent me the actual Redmi Note 11, so I immediately compared it with the moto g31. The shooting took place around 11:00 am on March 4th, and all the images were taken without retouching. AI is turned off.

Compared to a few years ago, the image quality has improved so much that it's hard to tell that it's an entry-level model. Xiaomi's low-end models (Redmi 9T, etc.) had poor autofocus in the default camera app, so I installed GCam separately.
However, with Redmi Note 11, the autofocus accuracy has been raised to a level where you can clearly experience it. Motorola was highly rated for autofocus on low-end models, but Redmi Note 11 overturned that image. Focusing speed is also fast.

Even if the same image sensor is used in Redmi Note 11 and moto g31, the image processing method is different because the ISP is "Qualcomm" and "MediaTek". Qualcomm is conscious of "brightness" with a clear color tone. Impression that MediaTek finishes in a slightly retro atmosphere that makes you feel nostalgic. Which do you prefer?

The moto g31 has a minimum ISO of "100", while the Redmi Note 11 has "50". ISO indicates the sensitivity of light, and the higher the number, the faster the shutter speed and the less camera shake.
However, if you increase the ISO value too much, noise will occur and the image quality will deteriorate, so be careful. The Redmi Note 11 has an ISO of 50, but the shutter speed is faster than the moto g31.
The Snapdragon 680 is an entry model Soc, but the ISP uses the triple specification "Spectra 346". You can see that they put a lot of effort into camera quality. The ISP uses AI to enhance image quality in low light. The effect is reflected in the ISO value and image quality.

The wide angle of the scenery is well described in detail, and the quality is sufficient. The moto g31 automatically applies HDR, making the leaves of trees three-dimensional. Redmi Note 11 has a natural finish.
Both Redmi Note 11 and moto g31 have a "pro mode" that allows manual settings. If you don't like the color of the sky, you can fine-tune it by changing the "WB (white balance)".

Next, super high resolution shooting of "50 million pixels". At 50 megapixels, there is no pixel integration, so less light is captured per pixel. Try to shoot in a place with as much light as possible.
With 50 million pixels, the amount of data is about three times the normal amount. If you want to keep as much detail as possible, or if you don't want to trim the image later, we recommend shooting in the normal mode, which allows pixel integration to work and shoot brighter.

In the days when pixels and image sensors were small, the digital zoom significantly degraded image quality even at low magnifications. But the latest model is different. For both models, "2x" is of course used regularly. There is no problem if "4 times" is also at the web material level. "6 times to 8 times" is also possible to recognize the shape.
A telephoto camera physically magnifies the subject and does not degrade image quality. However, the disadvantage is that the f-number of the lens is large, and camera shake is likely to occur.
Digital zoom deteriorates as the magnification increases. However, the main camera basically uses a bright lens, and the image sensor and pixel size are large, so camera shake can be minimized. In other words, there is great significance in improving the image quality of digital zoom.
In this comparison, there is no big difference in image quality between the main cameras of Redmi Note 11 and moto g31. However, I feel that the ISP performance of Redmi Note 11 is better, so there may be a slight difference depending on the shooting scene. The improvement in autofocus is also very significant.
Both Redmi Note 11 and moto g31 are terminals with strong elements as media players. For the price, the image quality of the camera can't be helped, but it's a solid depiction that doesn't make you feel cheap. Take lots of pictures and enjoy them on the beautifully colored organic EL display!
