　まず、攻撃側に相当する「ソニックガン」から見ていこう。　ソニックガンとは、中国アリババグループ傘下のAlibaba Securityに属するエンジニアたちが研究している攻撃技術と、それを実装した機器を指す。「ソニック」の名のとおり超音波を利用し、電子機器の動作をコントロールしたり妨害する技術である。　ドローンやセグウェイのような自律的に姿勢制御を行う移動体、さらに仮想現実（VR）のヘッドセットやゴーグル、スマートフォンにはジャイロセンサーや加速度センサーが搭載されている。ソニックガンはこれらセンサーを攻撃するものだ。　機械がバランスをとったり一定のバランスを維持したりするためには、重力や慣性を電気信号に変換する必要がある。その変換を担うのが、MEMS（Micro Electro Mechanical Systems）という超小型機械の技術を応用した半導体チップである。　MEMSは慣性で動く電極でコンデンサーを作り、その静電容量の変化で重力や加速度を検知するデバイスだ。Alibaba Securityのエンジニアは、この静電容量の変化を、超音波の共振によって攻撃するアイデアを考えて具現化したのである。

　ソニックガンの原理はシンプルで、かつ高価な機器も必要ない。一般的な発振器（オシレーター、スタンダードジェネレータ）と超音波を再生できる小型スピーカーがあれば誰でも作れる。発振器は数万円程度するが、スピーカーは秋葉原のパーツ屋や家電量販店で販売されている数百円のもので十分である。　ただし、Alibaba Securityの研究は、“その先”を見据えている。単に超音波でMEMSの動作を妨害するだけでなく、MEMSを乗っ取って任意の挙動を制御する取り組みも行っているのだ。実際、ジャイロセンサーの一部の制御には成功している。ちなみに、安価なスピーカーでは指向性の問題や発振器の出力の問題から、あまり遠隔地からの妨害ができない。これも研究課題のひとつとなっているという。　なおBlackHatのセッションでは、実際にドローンやセグウェイを模した機器がコントロールを失い、墜落したり倒れたりする実証実験の動画が上映された。さらに会場ではVRゴーグルの動作を無効にするデモ実施された。【次ページ】三菱電機がソニックガンの対抗策を開発、その中身とは？
