Starting in May 2021, a giant sculpture in the shape of a military drone will be installed at 30 Dingmu of the High Line, an elevated park in New York. The artist Sam Durant created this work. The material is fiberglass and the wing is about 15 meters wide. Its specifications are tilted by the wind like actual military aircraft and, of course, unarmed.
The work titled Untitled (UAV) was first conceived in 2016. This is the time to openly solicit works for the public art space of the work known as High Line Plinth. After that, he stayed in the final selection along with 12 other works, this time as the second work in the space.
The theme of the work is War. The "invisible war" being waged in other countries of the United States has a meaning that people can also see. In addition, as the wind chicken plays a role, there is also another aspect of the expression of all kinds of "political wind" at that time.
Durant said in the project statement: "this work raises a question about the goal of using, monitoring and killing drones in remote or nearby places, and even consider whether society as a whole will agree to these acts and allow them to continue in the future. Art is an act that speculates alternatives and other possibilities, putting what is not said, what is unknown, and what is invisible ahead to promote discussion. "
Since 2020, the high line has been reopened to minorities and pre-registrants. At present, there is no need to register from 7am to 19:00 on weekdays and continue to register in advance on weekends.
Durant's work will be set up in May after the end of Simon Lee's "Brick House" exhibition, High Line Plinth's first commission job, and will be on display until Sunday, August 22, 2021.
