Pocket-sized devices have changed the world ... Looking back at the history of the iPhone with photos | Business Insider Japan

When Steve Jobs unveiled his first iPhone in 2007, he called it "an iPod, a phone, and an internet communicator." Jobs knew that the iPhone would change our communication and Internet access, but perhaps even he didn't predict exactly how impact it would be.

The original iPhone laid the foundation for modern smartphones and pioneered an era when pocket-sized computers became the norm for tapping to find out everything.

Now we can do everything from our smartphones to our work, communication, shopping, travel, financial management, entertainment experiences and more. The GSMA Intelligence estimates that more than 5 billion people around the world are using some mobile service. In 2019, American consumers spent more time watching mobile device screens than watching TV, according to eMarketer.

Let's see how the iPhone has evolved.

iPhone (2007)

It all started with the first iPhone, announced in 2007. With a 3.5-inch screen, a 2-megapixel camera, and just 16GB of storage, it didn't yet support third-party apps.

While these specs look primitive when compared to today's ultra-powerful smartphones, the original iPhone played an important role in setting the standard for mobile devices. For example, its multi-touch display was important in paving the way for touch-based operating systems in smartphones, tablets and computers around the world today.

iPhone 3G (2008)

iPhone 3G has added features such as GPS, 3G networking, and faster performance. But perhaps most importantly, the App Store has transformed a mobile device with Internet access into a full-fledged computing platform. Today, the App Store has more than 2 million apps, creating an app economic zone that has enabled services such as Uber and Snapchat to thrive.

iPhone 3GS (2009)

The iPhone 3GS has further improvements such as a 3-megapixel camera, voice control, and extended battery life. New software is just as important, introducing standard features after cut and paste, as well as support for multimedia messaging.

iPhone 4 (2010)

iPhone 4 is the first major update. Compared to previous models, it has a thinner and sharper shape, featuring a glass body and stainless steel edging. The Retina display, which has been a feature of Apple products since then, was introduced. It was also the first iPhone to feature FaceTime for video calls.

The iPhone 4 was generally well received, but it was also criticized. The biggest one is the antenna problem. On some iPhone 4, the call was interrupted depending on how you held it.

iPhone 4S (2011)

The voice assistant Siri was introduced from the iPhone 4S. Siri is now included in almost every Apple product.

iPhone 5 (2012)

With the iPhone 5, Apple has expanded the screen size to 4 inches. It was especially important considering that it was a big upgrade from 3.5 inches and was competing with big screen Android devices such as Samsung. The iPhone 5 is also the first model to have a Lightning port, which is also found on today's iPhones.

iPhone 5S (2013)

The iPhone 5S was the first iPhone to have Touch ID (facial recognition) on the home button, and this feature was a staple of the iPhone until it replaced Face ID (face recognition) on the iPhone X in 2017. This frees the user from having to enter the passcode each time they unlock it.

iPhone 5C (2013)

The colorful iPhone 5C was cheaper than the flagship iPhone 5S. Available in blue, green and yellow, it's $ 100 cheaper than 5S.

The iPhone 5c didn't have a fingerprint sensor, had a previous-generation processor, and had a plastic body compared to the aluminum iPhone 5s. This is the first time Apple has offered a low-priced option and set a precedent for the iPhone XR and iPhone 11.

iPhone 6 / iPhone 6 Plus (2014)

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus mark an important turning point in the history of the iPhone. For the first time, the large-screen iPhone 6 Plus allows consumers to choose between two different screen sizes. This was especially important given that Android smartphones offered ever-increasing screen sizes.

Apple has also redesigned the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, which will continue until it changes on the iPhone X in 2017. In addition, the iPhone 6 introduced faster processors and storage options.

iPhone 6s / iPhone 6s Plus (2015)

The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus are minor updates to the iPhone 6 that add a new feature called 3D Touch. This allows you to access shortcuts by pressing the display deeply. Others included a faster processor and a 12-megapixel camera.

iPhone SE (2016)

Launched in 2016, the iPhone SE is a consumer product looking for an iPhone that's smaller and cheaper than the iPhone 6S. It had the same processor as the flagship model iPhone 6S on a 4-inch display like the iPhone 5.

iPhone 7 / iPhone 7 Plus (2016)

With the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, Apple has marked the end of an era by eliminating the headphone jack. Instead, I had to plug my headphones into the Lightning slot. That year, he also announced the wireless earphones AirPods.

Apple may not have been the first company to lose the headphone jack, but it became the norm shortly after the iPhone 7 went on sale. Since then, the popularity of AirPods has skyrocketed, and Wedbush Securities analysts predict that 85 to 90 million AirPods will be sold in 2020.

The iPhone 7 Plus was also the first iPhone to feature a dual camera and portrait mode. This is a function that blurs the background and makes the subject look sharp. The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus were also the first iPhones to be waterproof.

iPhone 8 / iPhone 8 Plus (2017)

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus were the first iPhones to charge wirelessly. It also features a new glass design that symbolizes the departure from aluminum, which has been on sale for years since the iPhone 5.

iPhone X (2017)

The iPhone X was an important product for Apple. Launched at the same time as the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, the smartphone was the first iPhone to feature a near-rimless OLED display, face recognition support, and no home button. This is a precedent for the look and feel of the current iPhone, the first to have a minimum price of over $ 1000.

iPhone XS / iPhone XS Max (2018)

The iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are the successors to the iPhone X, with new faster processors, better water resistance, and improved portrait modes. It wasn't a dramatic difference from the iPhone X, but it was a sign of the intention to continue the full-screen design introduced in the iPhone X in future flagship models.

iPhone XR (2018)

Apple has released the iPhone XR along with the iPhone XS and XS Max. It comes in a wide variety of colors and is about $ 250 cheaper than the iPhone XS.

The iPhone XR was positioned as a cheap alternative to the flagship model, and it was possible to get a full-screen design at a low price. The iPhone XS does not have the organic EL screen and dual camera, but other than that, it is priced. It was quite similar to the tall model.

iPhone 11 (2019)

With a relatively low price of $ 700 and a wide range of color options, the iPhone 11 is basically the successor to the iPhone XR. It features a new dual camera system, including an ultra-wide-angle camera, with a night mode, high-speed processor, and high-resolution front-facing camera.

iPhone 11 Pro / iPhone 11 Pro Max (2019)

The more expensive iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max are the first iPhones to feature triple-lens cameras: wide-angle cameras, ultra-wide-angle cameras, and telephoto lenses. When announced at its annual event in September, the company positioned it as the ultimate mobile camera for professional photographers and filmmakers.
