"AfterShokz", which attracted attention in the field of bone conduction earphones, changed its brand name to "Shokz" in 2021. As the first new brand, "OpenRun Pro" is a product that is seeking investors in the crowdfunding "GREEN FUNDING". This will be the successor to the "Aeropex" released in the AfterShokz era in 2019.
Since I had the opportunity to borrow it just before the end of the campaign, I would like to give you a feeling of use.
Shokz's bone conduction earphone "OpenRun Pro". It has an IP55 dustproof and waterproof function. In addition to the black in the photo, blue is also available. When I opened the OpenRun Pro package, the first thing I felt was "Wow, it's small." This is because the bone conduction earphones I've used so far have only been built into caps or low-priced ones.
Some of the bone conduction earphones I've used so far. The caps even come in different colorsOpenRun Pro is a very compact bone conduction earphone weighing only about 29g. The band is made of titanium and can be bent quite freely.
Equipped with a battery that can be used continuously for up to 10 hours, in a lifestyle model of 2 hours round trip commuting, 3 hours online meeting, 1 hour workout, and 3 hours watching videos, " Even so, there is still an hour to spare.” It's so small, but how can it last that long?
What's more, it also supports quick charging, which allows you to use it for about 1.5 hours with a 5-minute charge, so even if you forget to charge it before going to bed, you can listen to music while you're getting ready for work. It looks like it will be in time for the playback.
Charging is done via a dedicated magnet port. If you bring it closer, it will be connected with a pleasant "click" sound, so you don't have to worry about plugging in a cable.
In addition to the main unit, the OpenRun Pro package includes a carrying case, a USB cable for charging, a manual, and a leaflet that encourages application installationMagnetic port for charging. The magnetic force is strong, and if you bring it any closer, it "clicks" into place. The LED lights up red while charging.OpenRun Pro is able to detect the noise generated around you during a call. It is equipped with a dual noise-cancelling microphone that prevents the other party from telling you, and it can be used not only for normal calls but also for many calling apps such as Facebook Messenger, FaceTime, and LINE calls. You can also answer incoming calls from those apps with OpenRun Pro's "multi-function button".
The microphone is built into the right sideIt also supports multi-pairing, and up to 2 devices can be connected at the same time. It is possible to use it by connecting a work PC in preparation for a meeting and a smartphone for listening to BGM during work or workout.
After pairing with the first device by long pressing the power button, turn off the power, and then long press the power button again to pair with the second device. After turning off the power, press and hold the power button to enter pairing mode, then press and hold the power button (or volume up button) and the multi-function button to enter multi-pairing modePrevious Shokz has never offered a dedicated app to customize the device, but OpenRun Pro offers a Shokz app for iOS / Android. Unfortunately, at the time of writing, it was not registered in the app store, but it will be possible to customize the functions assigned to the multifunction button, set the equalizer, switch languages, check the remaining battery level, etc. Firmware updates will also be available through the app.
It also has IP55 level dust and water resistance, so there is no problem even if you are working out in light rain or running into the train while sweating in the middle of summer. However, it is not as dustproof and waterproof as the previous Aeropex model (IP67), so it is not guaranteed to be used in pouring rain or in the shower. You don't have to worry about sudden rain, and even if you get sweat on it, you can wash it off with water.
The biggest feature of OpenRun Pro is the deep bass reproduction. This is due to the adoption of the independently developed "Shokz TurboPitch technology" (9th generation). By installing two bass enhancers inside the speaker, we were able to get closer to a deep sound.
The communication standard is Bluetooth 5.1, and the communication distance is about 10m. Supported profiles are A2DP, AVRCP, HSP, HFP. The frequency characteristics range from 20Hz to 20,000Hz.
Now that we have seen the overview, what is the actual situation? Let's try it now.
