I can't lie. He is personally a big fan of Fujifilm's "instax" series of photo printers. He also likes instax cameras, but they have limited use and usually don't want to carry them around. Instead, it's better to print photos taken with a smartphone or mirrorless camera with an instax printer.
I like photos taken with instax, but the original format is only 1.8 inches x 2.4 inches (46 mm x 62 mm). It's pretty small, and instax isn't Polaroid. The square format is a little larger with a side of 2.4 inches (62 mm), but if you want the largest size, 3.9 inches x 2.4 inches (99 mm x 62 mm), you need to buy a camera.
But that's a thing of the past. With the newly released "instax Link WIDE" photo printer for smartphones, you can enjoy the large format of instax with just the printer.
The instax printer I bought for the first time was a product called "instax SHARE SP-1" [Note: In Japan, it is also known as "smartphone de cheki"], and I bought it without thinking about anything deep. It is now an integral part of interacting with people while traveling.
This printer also aroused children's interest in photography. It's not perfect, but printing on the fly is magical beyond the limits of the product. It's not the image quality you deserve for an art gallery, but it's definitely fun.
I still use the instax SHARE SP-1 that I bought for the first time. The printed photos are a nice and casual gift, and can also be used as a starting point for conversation.
I personally like to take portraits, but I'm not diplomatic, so I'm not good at asking others to take pictures. This is especially difficult these days when everyone thinks photos will be posted on Instagram. Conversations are often quite different if you tell them you're not interested in social media and you can print out the photos you take right away and hand them over.
Even if you're not interested in traveling or taking pictures of strangers, there is something in physical photography that deepens the relationship between an image and looking at it. You can't casually scroll to the next image. Don't be kidding, I want you to actually print the photo. I'm sure there will be a day when I'm glad I did that.
This is one of the reasons I love the instax Link WIDE so much that it allows me to print great instax photos in large sizes. Large-format 3.9-inch x 2.4-inch photos are landscape orientation, with the wide part of the white edge on the bottom long side of the rectangle, but if you want to print a portrait orientation, there's something that prevents it. there is nothing.
