Kroger, the largest supermarket chain in the US, announced on May 3rd that it would begin a demonstration experiment to deliver food and daily necessities using an autonomous flying drone. Products ordered on smartphones can be delivered not only to the user's home, but also to a designated location such as a park or beach, in as little as 15 minutes.
The demonstration experiment will begin within a few weeks at the store "Kroger Marketplace" in Centerville, Ohio. This summer, we plan to start a similar demonstration experiment at a store in California, the chain "Ralph's".
DroneExpress, a subsidiary of Telegrid Technologies (New Jersey), which operates a logistics business using drones, will cooperate with the experiment. Drone Express employees will manage the flight inside the trailer installed at the test store, and Drone Express will remotely monitor the drone.
The maximum payload of the drone used for the experiment is approximately 5 pounds (approximately 2.27 kilograms). Prepare a set of camping desserts such as crackers, marshmallows and chocolates, a baby care set of formula and wipes, etc. for drone delivery.
Among major retailers in the United States, Walmart is conducting delivery experiments in three states with different drone business companies, and Amazon.com last year conducted a delivery experiment using its own drones. Approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
